Nationally Known Poet Marc Lacy of AVO Publishing Tells the Phoenix

?I immediately think about how it can influence EVERYONE to reach deep down inside and pull out their best effort. At the end of the day, it?s all about the effort you?ve been blessed to administer. ?? ?

TPU:
Okay Marc you are a poet, a spoken word artist, an author, amongst other things. Tell me about Marc Lacy the man.

Marc:
Marc the man? Hmmm. Let?s see?I am humble, sort of laidback; but a vicious competitor at the same time. I am technical, yet creative (left brain/right brain). I always get accused of working too hard and never resting. I love my family, friends, and especially God. I try to live everyday as if it were a gift from God, and not something that I?m entitled to.

TPU:
I see that you are an engineer by trade. When did you become a poet and spoken word artist? Have you always been interested in poetry?

Marc:
I?ve always been somewhat of a technical person by nature. However my artistic side was just as prevalent when growing up. In grade school I discovered my knack for creative writing. However, there was really no platform at the time that could thrust me to develop it further. During college, my interest in poetry grew stronger; but there again, it was not really popular in my immediate market, therefore there was no influence to pursue it. However, in the early 2000s is when I decided to get serious about it. I eventually got published, then began touring, thus the rest is history.

TPU:
You are the author and publisher of two books of poetry. The Looking Heart ? Poetic Expressions from Within and Rock & Fire ? Love Poetry from the Core.

What is the inspiration behind The Looking Heart and Rock and Fire?

Marc:
The Looking Heart was my first. And because it was my first, my focus was to make the content as universal as possible. Within it, I talk about love, feelings, societal issues, etc. I even have an ?Odes? chapter in it as well. I wanted it to be something that everyone could enjoy and not just a specific target demographic.

Rock & Fire was much more of a targeted project. This particular publication was aimed at my focal demographic. In Rock & Fire, I talk about all things love/lust and pull no punches, especially when it comes to the hardcore issues. My thrust to publish a book of love poetry stemmed from the demand from my supporters at the time. They would hear me do love related pieces on the open mic circuit.

TPU:
I will say one of my favorites Is Punchback and Rest Stop. Thank you for writing those.

TPU:
You also have a book Wretched Saints in which you co-wrote with Assuanta Howard. Is that fiction or some other genre?

Marc:
Wretched Saints is a book of fiction short stories that focuses on so-called ?church folks? acting unchurched; and expecting a ?free ride? because they are church-goers. But they then find out, that if you are up to no good, no good will come to you regardless of what societal status you may bear.

TPU:
Not only are you a spoken word artist you also have your own publishing company Avo and you are the co-founded of The Legendary ArtNSoul Society of Expression. Can you tell us more about that?

Marc:
ArtNSoul Society of Expression was founded in 2001 via four young men who were searching for a different avenue by which to uplift and entertain the community. We chose poetry as the mainstay. And via several years of prayer and hard work, I am happy to say that we are still going strong.

We are blessed to be orchestrators of some of the biggest and most influential poetry events in the Southeast United States. The community support is overwhelming and this is due in part to the various causes ArtNSoul supports throughout the year. We are grateful and we are humbled.

TPU:
You won poet of the year from AAMBC in 2010, you won the 2006 Poet of the Year Award (Disilgold.com) and also the Self-Published Poet of the Year Award (Aspicomm) in 2006 for The Looking Heart.

You are the recipient of a number of rewards and again I see that you have been nominated for Poet of the Year and Influential Poet and Spoken Word Artist for this year?s National Poetry Awards.

As a matter of fact you are the Poet of the Year for this year?s National Poetry Awards.

How do feel about the constant nominations and awards that you have received?

Marc:
I am always humbled by the nominations. However my emphasis is ALWAYS on the effort itself. I tell my mentees to focus on the mission, and let everything else fall into place. And regardless of whether you receive and award or a nomination, ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST. But when I do win an award, I immediately think about how it can influence EVERYONE to reach deep down inside and pull out their best effort. At the end of the day, it?s all about the effort you?ve been blessed to administer.

TPU:
Okay I have one word for you, haters. It?s a word that I care not to use too often, but they do exist. Do you have them and how do you deal with them?

Marc:
Of course I do. I take it as flattery. But because I have memory like an elephant coupled with the fact that I FIRMLY believe in competition, I get invigorated every time I encounter it (but of course, everyone is not worthy of a reaction from you).

As a matter of fact, if I didn?t have it to contend with, I?d be concerned. A hater will never mess with anyone who?s irrelevant. But all in all, it has not really been a distraction or hindrance. This is something that people have had to contend with from day one. And will always have to contend with; especially if they are striving.

TPU:
Marc in your own words can you give me three words to describe success?

Marc:
1. Faith
2. Determination
3. Persistence

TPU:
What can we expect from Marc Lacy in the future?

Marc:
I will continue to mentor other poets/authors, produce spoken word CDs, partake of literary collaborations, publish fiction novels, public speaking, and write editorials for magazines and newspapers?God willing, of course.

TPU:
Lastly what legacy do you want to leave?

Marc:
This is something that I really don?t think about too often. But if I had to say, I just want people to know that I gave my very best effort in maximizing my capabilities while making a better way for others
