Space shuttle Endeavour exhibit to launch Tuesday

For more than two decades, officials at the California Science Center dreamed of showcasing a space shuttle at the Exposition Park museum.

It took a nationwide competition, a three-day cross-country flight and a harrowing 12-mile trek through the streets of Los Angeles, but on Tuesday, that dream will come true.

The free, state-run museum will open its doors to the display pavilion housing the retired orbiter Endeavour, which arrived at the Science Center about two weeks ago. The 18,000-square-foot building will showcase the museum's prized exhibit until a new air and space wing is built.??

"Obviously people were excited just to see it fly over or even [get] a closer look when they could see it going down the streets, but here they get a lot more of a chance to see it," Science Center President Jeffrey Rudolph said. "People can learn a lot more about it."

There are two separate parts to the temporary set-up: the Samuel Oschin display pavilion and another exhibit detailing the space shuttle's history and ties to Southern California. The entire space shuttle fleet ? Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis, Endeavour and Enterprise, the test orbiter ? was assembled in Palmdale.

Museum visitors won't be able to go inside the 122-foot-long Endeavour, but they can virtually navigate the flight deck, mid-deck and payload bay by using a touch-screen display. Officials also removed the shuttle's galley and toilet to show separately.

"It looks like a porta-potty," one fifth-grader said of the latter at a preview last week.

Tucked in the corner of the display pavilion is one of the massive engines that propelled Endeavour into space. Designed, built and tested by Canoga Park-based Rocketdyne, the 14-foot-long boosters were the first reusable engines used by NASA.

Each time the shuttles launched, a Rocketdyne team would pore over data from a support center at its San Fernando Valley plant, making sure the engines were ready for takeoff and performed properly during their 8 1/2-minute burn.

FULL COVERAGE: Endeavour's final journey to L.A.

The support center has been reassembled inside the museum as part of the shuttle display. All of the pieces are original to the Canoga Park facility, down to the maroon chairs and computer keyboards.

"I hope that when people see this hardware they're able to appreciate the technological complexity and technological difficulty of putting the shuttle into space and keep it going for all these years," said Mike Carlson, a Rocketdyne engineer who once managed the support center. "It wasn't easy."

And then there's Endeavour itself.

Visitors will be able to walk underneath the orbiter's weathered underbelly, so close one can read the small, white lettering on each tile. Near the rear of the shuttle, there are about a dozen tiles that were damaged during Endeavour's 25th and final mission, revealing what looks like Styrofoam underneath.

"It's amazing," said Diane Perlov, the museum's deputy director of exhibits. "The first time I saw it ? it brings tears to your eyes. It's really something."

The shuttle will be even more impressive in its permanent home in the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center, Rudolph said. There, the shuttle will be displayed vertically as though it is about to launch, complete with an external tank and twin solid rocket boosters. That 170,000-square-foot facility, which will also feature exhibits on flight and space exploration, should open in about five years, Rudolph said.

Money for the temporary and permanent displays will come from a $200-million fundraising campaign. Rudolph said about 80% of that is earmarked for the new air and space wing.

"When we have it standing up vertically, there's nothing in the world like it," Rudolph said. "If you're going to see one space shuttle, this is going to be it."

The two other museums that house retired shuttles ? the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City and the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia ? both have reported increased attendance since their orbiters went on display. Rudolph said he expects the same boost for the Science Center, guessing the shuttle would bring attendance to about 2 million people per year, up from about 1.5 million.

Museum and NASA officials have repeatedly expressed their hope that Endeavour will encourage the next generation of engineers, scientists and astronauts.

"This thing will inspire kids to want to be astronauts," said retired astronaut Mark Kelly, who commanded Endeavour's last mission. "Maybe one of those little kids that will be looking up at this space shuttle will one day go and walk on Mars for the first time."

Amy Davis is a fifth-grade teacher at Inglewood's Century Park Elementary School. Her class watched last month as Endeavour, riding a jumbo jet, flew low over the school on its way to the Los Angeles International Airport. The children shrieked with glee as it passed over their heads.

Two students ran up to Davis. Ten-year-old Richard Hercules had tears streaming down his face.

"They're happy tears," Richard's friend told their teacher.

Richard has wanted to be an astronaut as long as he can remember. He "felt lucky" he got to see Endeavour, he said.

"That's the only space shuttle I've ever seen," he said. "It gave me a boost of wanting to be an astronaut more."

Davis wrote to the Science Center, explaining how moved Richard was by the experience. A NASA official heard the story and sent Richard an application to Space Camp in Alabama.

Richard is now working on the application, collecting letters of recommendation and writing an essay on astronaut John Glenn, trying to earn a scholarship so he can go.

"Dreams are possible," Davis said. "It was meant to be."

Global drive to value nature headed for Asia | Eco-Business.com

A new global coalition of businesses seeking to lead on protecting biodiversity and natural resources will set up shop in Singapore early next month.

The TEEB Business Coalition ? kicked off last year? as part of a major international initiative called The Economics of Eco-systems and Biodiversity (TEEB) ? aims to put the value of natural resources squarely into the realm of the mainstream economy to better manage and protect them.

Special advisor to the United Nation?s Environment Programme?s ?Green Economy Initiative? Pavan Sukhdev, who headed the original TEEB study in 2008 after 14 years as an investment banker for Deutche Bank, discusses the new initiative in an exclusive interview with Eco-Business.

Eco-Business: What is the purpose of the TEEB Business Coalition?

Pavan Sukhdev: The TEEB Business Coalition is one platform for businesses across the globe to come together and transform how they themselves, the policymakers and the public perceive their activities and gauge their contribution to the economy, to ecosystems and for human well-being. The overriding goal of the Coalition is to change the way business is done and to be part of forging the new corporation of the future.

EB: What do you consider a reasonable time frame to accomplish such a transformation?

PS: The Coalition has a three-year overview of enabling corporations to develop a shared understanding of the importance of ecosystems and biodiversity; creating robust and credible valuation methodologies that have the support of a number of groups and bodies such as the accountancy profession, economists and scientists; be recognised on a national and international scale and bring about visible and tangible change in corporate behaviours.

EB: Why choose Singapore as the headquarters for the new coalition?

PS: The geographic location of Singapore and its unique position in global markets provides the Coalition a strong presence and connection with emerging Asian economies ? the future centres of corporate and economic growth.

EB: Why and how should businesses seek to integrate environmental values and services into their business models?

PS: The economic invisibility of nature in our dominant economic model is both a symptom and a root cause of human society?s disconnect from nature. We value what we price, but nature?s services ? providing clean air, fresh water, soil fertility, flood prevention, drought control, climate stability, etc ? are, mostly, not traded in any markets and not priced. These so-called ?ecosystem services? are all ?public goods? provided free. When was the last time trees sent us an invoice for their services of providing clean air, sequestering carbon and in regulating climate change?

Unless businesses recognise their negative and positive externalities, they cannot realise their footprints on biodiversity, on forest, on fresh water and their carbon footprints as well. Therefore, we need to first measure the values of the externalities of ecosystem services and biodiversity; so that they can be managed. Doing so may reveal the true nature of the trade-offs being made: between different ecosystem services (food provision or carbon storage), between different beneficiaries (private gain by some, public loss to many), at different scales (local costs, global benefits) and across different time horizons; enabling us to make better decisions.

Apart from the overwhelming evidence of the several risks faced by businesses due to loss in biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES), there are several opportunities too for businesses that need to be explored and expanded further. There is an increased need for new technologies and products to serve as substitutes, reduce degradation, restore ecosystems or increase the efficiency of ecosystem services. Also, new markets such as water-quality trading, certified sustainable products, wetland banking and threatened species banking provide opportunities for new business models such as ecosystem restoration and environmental asset finance. Moreover, there are new revenue streams for currently unrealised assets such as wetlands and forests for which new markets and payments for ecosystem services are emerging.

EB: Experts have said that society is operating at a ?nature deficit?. What does this mean?

PS: Presently we are consuming the world?s biodiversity and ecosystems at an unsustainable rate (according to the ecological footprint indicator we have exceeded the planetary boundary by over 50 per cent). Intensifying urbanisation, land-use changes and continuing high rates of economic growth in some of the large developing economies have resulted in demand outstripping supply of several commodities; placing extreme stress on the ability of planetary sources and sinks to regenerate. This is leading to depletion in the store of the planet?s natural capital and causing a ?nature deficit?.

According to estimates, over 30 per cent of the world?s coral reefs have been seriously damaged through fishing, pollution, disease and coral bleaching; since 1900, the world has lost 50 per cent of its wetlands; and the human-caused (anthropogenic) rate of species extinction is estimated to be 1,000 times more rapid than the ?natural? rate of extinction typical of Earth?s long-term history.

EB: How will this nature deficit impact society going forward?

PS: To illustrate this deficit, in 2008, TEEB estimated that the annual economic loss of the earth?s natural capital was between US$2 trillion and US$4.5 trillion. Also, as suggested by recent evidence of climate change on much faster and deeper impacts, including the risk of human conflict caused by competition for biodiversity resources and ecosystem services; such losses are a threat to the functioning of our planet, our economy and human society.

/>/>/>/> />

All businesses, regardless of sector and region, both impact and depend on biodiversity and ecosystem services. The global marine fishing industry, for example, not only provides livelihoods to around 45 million fishermen involved in primary production and sustains 180 million jobs linked indirectly to the fishing industry; it also provides over 20 per cent of the average per capital intake of animal protein for over 1.5 billion people ? mostly the poor ? across the world. Hence, overexploitation of ocean fish stocks is directly linked to an exacerbation of negative economic (yield, employment, income, etc.) and social (poverty, nutrition, etc.) consequences.

Also, resource constraints due to decreasing natural capital represents significant business risk not only from the potential inability to (find materials), but also from various operational, regulatory, reputational, market and financial risks ? which are often overlooked and underestimated by businesses.

EB: What sorts of solutions become possible by putting economic values on nature?

PS: There are several successful case studies demonstrating the benefits of incorporating legislation-based, policy-based and community-based conservation practices such as protected-areas, land-use management schemes, payments for ecosystem services (PES) and REDD+, both at a welfare and economic level.

In Costa Rica, payments to farmers who conserve forests on their land rather than destroy them for low-earning pasture have become almost a national environment programme.?In New York, the administration thought it fit to pay land-owners of the adjoining Catskills Mountains over US$ 1 billion to improve farm and water management techniques. It was much cheaper than building a new water treatment facility for the city, which would have cost US$ 6 billion and over US$ 300 million in annual operating costs.

EB: To the layperson, putting a value on nature seems an immense task that could never be entirely accurate. How do you go about getting authoritative figures?

/>/>/>/> />

PS: We need to ensure that people understand the problems caused by the economic invisibility of nature; which must be addressed by recognizing, demonstrating and capturing the values of ecosystem services. Unless we do that, what we are actually doing is valuing ecosystem services (like the ability of rainforests to feed the rainfall and support the agricultural economies of Latin America) at ?zero? price. How is that accurate?

Also, valuation does not mean commodification. There are several ways of valuing: you can value as a society, as a policy-maker or by paying money. It is for the society to decide which form of valuation to adhere to in each particular case. For instance, in the case of sacred forests worshipped by the local community ? i.e., having infinite value ? you have to respect that. End of story. You cannot take away from people what is sacred to them.

A great deal of work has already been done on measuring and valuing the impact of business activity on the natural environment in addition to and as a result of the TEEB initiative. However, these voices are highly fragmented, with a lack of consistency across methodologies and limited engagement between government, civil society and business. There is now a need for collaboration among them in order to scale current solutions, maximise the value of these activities, avoid duplication of effort, focus activity where it is needed most and to innovate around what are the market and policy drivers as well as the new business models that will minimise negative impacts and maximise the positive.

EB: Some companies ? such as clothing manufacturer Puma ? have experimented with environmental accounting on a voluntary basis, but numbers are isolated from the general balance sheet. Do you think environmental impacts will ever be integrated into corporate financial statements? ?Should they be?

PS: What Puma has done is exhibit leadership to demonstrate that accounting for externalities at the company and supply chain level is very much possible. That?s an example in transparency, measurement and disclosure, for us to look at and draw comfort from. If more companies did this, and if more sectors engaged in the same; you could have policymakers and analysts and consumers and NGOs actually look and compare the social performance of companies. Although we still don?t have environmental externalities integrated into corporate financial statements, the path is laid out.

Also, it makes good business sense for companies to integrate the values of their externalities into their value chains. For instance, as public awareness on BES loss increases, this in turn increases pressure on business to continuously review their value chains to ensure security of supply of resources, continued access to the market and protect against reputational risk.

Kicked off last year by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) ? along with UNEP, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), WWF International, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) ? the TEEB Business Coalition will launch its global headquarters in Singapore at the 6 November Responsible Business Forum at Singapore Management University. The event will mark the start of a new Singapore chapter of the WBCSD.

?I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don?t have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.?

For many, birthdays, anniversaries, and the holidays serve such a purpose. It?s a time when we remember those who are important to us with gifts that express gratitude, appreciation, and memories. Antiques on the Square offers many hundreds of such items for you to browse through.

One of my favorite memories about Christmas as a child is when I received any of the little Steiff animals. They were top-of-the-line and, in my imaginary world, as real as unreal could possibly get. To this day, when I see a Steiff, those same feelings are stirred. If you?re one of those nostalgic people, then you?re in luck!

?Several of our dealers have expertise in specific areas such as clock repair, Steiff, and antique dolls,? says Pat.

Are you an HO Railroad collector? Perhaps you?re looking to replicate the 1950s with some chrome and formica table and chairs? Maybe you?re creating a scrapbook and need some unusual artwork. Great Guide When It Comes To Home Improvement

Each homeowner is interested in making improvements to his or her home. The following
article is packed with advice that will help in getting you started. As you move forward with
your improvements, you will build a great sense of accomplishment and confidence as you
go. You can learn more by simply reading on.

When paying your contractor use a check. If there is an issue you can contact your bank to
make a stop payment. This will also ensure that your contractor doesn't scam you and leave
with his down payment. Using your credit card is best because you can dispute transactions
long after they go through.

Necessary home improvements are more likely to get done when homeowners set aside
money for them in advance. By setting a reasonable amount of money aside each year, a
homeowner is more likely to make the repairs and improvements that are necessary. Any
money leftover after repairs can go into savings for large home improvements the following
year.

Always shop for low or no-VOC paints for interior use. They are better for the environment
and will not release harmful chemicals into the air you breathe. These are as good as regular
paint, they might cost a little more.

Freshen up the rooms in your house by changing accessories. New pillows for couches and
chairs or new wall decor can make a big change to a room for little cost. Purchase new
window treatments which are vibrant in color and pair them with a vase, lamp and pillows in
the same or coordinating colors. Your finished room will looked like a decorator was hired to
give your place an updated look.

Instead of using a table lamp, use a floor lamp to create more space on your nightstand.
These free-standing lamps are easy to move around, whereas table lamps require lots of
surface space. Select stylish lamps that fit your decor.

A great way to change the appearance of a room without breaking the bank is to apply a
fresh coat of paint in a unique fashion. Paint is pretty cheap, and there are some painting
techniques you can use to make bland walls pop.

Have you considered having filtered water in your home? This is actually a simple
improvement you can in a few hours. Units can be placed underneath the sink in your kitchen
and will filter the water.

If you are interested in improving your home, one of the best places to start is with a fresh
coat of exterior paint. A fresh coat of paint can instantly spruce up your home. If you vary the
color dramatically from your old one, you may feel like you're in a whole new house.

Interested in making changes to your home? Not surprisingly, you are not the only one. As
we have explained in this article, there are a few tricks that can make your home
improvement jobs easier to accomplish. You should have a lot more information available to
you after reading this article. Now start improving your home today!

There are many more pets than homes, and our shelter requires spay or neuter of adopted pets in an effort to reduce the number of homeless animals in our community.

Magnitude-7.7 quake strikes off western Canada

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) ? A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the west coast of Canada and a tsunami warning was issued, authorities said, but there were no immediate reports of major damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit the Queen Charlotte Islands just after 8 p.m. local time Saturday at a depth of about 3 miles (5 km) and was centered 96 miles (155 kilometers) south of Masset, British Columbia.

The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas of British Columbia and southern Alaska. It said the warning area included Craig and Sitka, Alaska.

The first wave was expected to Craig about 9:10 p.m. local time, but it wasn't expected to be large, about 1-foot (0.3-meters), said Bill Knight at the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center.

"That's the predicted arrival time for the first wave, which typically is not the largest but nevertheless we don't expect the maximum wave height to be large," he said.

The USGS said the 7.7-magnitude quake shook the area and was followed by a 5.8 magnitude aftershock several minutes later.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska said it was trying to warn everyone with a boat on the water to prepare for a potential tsunami.

Lt. Bernard Auth of the Juneau Command Center said the Coast Guard was working with local authorities to alert people in coastal towns to take precautions.

The quake struck 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of Sandspit, British Columbia, on the Haida Gwaii archipelago, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands. People in coastal areas were advised to move to higher ground.

Urs Thomas, operator of the Golden Spruce hotel in Port Clements said there was no warning before everything began moving inside and outside the hotel. He said it last about three minutes.

"It was a pretty good shock," Thomas, 59, said. "I looked at my boat outside. It was rocking. Everything was moving. My truck was moving."

After the initial jolt, Thomas began to check the hotel.

"The fixtures and everything were still swinging," he said. "I had some picture frames coming down."

Natural Resources Canada said in a statement that a major earthquake was felt across much of north and central British Columbia but that there were no immediate reports of damage.

"I was sitting at my desk on my computer and everything just started to move. It was maybe 20 seconds," said Joan Girbav, manager of Pacific Inn in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. "It's very scary. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt that."

The quake was felt on the mainlaind in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, which is across the Hecate Strait from the islands.

"Everyone felt it here," said city recreation director Rudy Kelly, who was setting up an evacuation center for people from the city's low-lying areas. He said the work was in anticipation of a tsunami wave.

Prince Rupert resident Grainne Barthe said fire trucks had blocked access to the waterfront when she came out of a restaurant.

"Everything was moving. It was crazy," she said. "I've felt earthquakes before but this was the biggest. It was nerve wracking. I thought we should be going under a table."

Developer proposes town homes in place of condos for ...

Posted on by mrwilliamsburg

Parkway Partners LLC, a local developer is asking the? Williamsburg Planning Commission to allow it to build town homes instead of the originally approved condos for a 3.5 acre site on Parkway Drive.

The planning commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, 3:30 P.M. in the Council Chambers of the Stryker Building, 412 North Boundary Street, to consider the request of Parkway Partners LLC to amend the zoning proffers for 222 Parkway Drive.

This property is zoned RM-2 Multifamily Dwelling District Conditional and was? approved in 2004? for a 46 unit condominium building. The original approved plans called? for a single four story 46-unit brick condominium building with enclosed parking on the ground floor, and three stories of condominiums above. The project has not been built.

The developer indicated that the proposal is? in response to the current economy and general marketability of condos.

This proposal significantly reduces the density as originally originally proposed Surprisingly the proposal asks that the number of dwelling be reduced from 46 condos to 30 town homes .

The City?s Architectural Review Board approved? a conceptual? plan and building elevations in August 2012

Pictured below are the new proposed elevations showing three story townhomes with front facing garages. Similar to what was built in Liberty Crossing by Ryan Townhomes. At this time no builder has been announced.

The original proposal called for restricting rentals to 15% of the 46 condos. The new proposal asks for 10 of the 30 units to be allowed to be rented.

Building Equity in Your Home | Geri Reilly Real Estate

Buying a home is a great way to improve your family?s financial security. The main way this happens is through home equity.

What is equity?

The equity in your home is the difference between its market value and the balance on your mortgage. In other words, equity is the wealth built up in your home over time. If you could sell your home for $400,000 and the amount you owe on your mortgage is only $100,000, then your equity is $300,000.

Equity is built in three ways: down payment, mortgage payments, and market gains. Making a down payment is a reduction in your mortgage amount, giving you instant equity in your home. Making house payments increases your equity as well, since every payment includes a portion for interest and a portion that reduces the amount of your loan amount (called the principal). Over time the amount of your payment that goes toward the principal increases and helps to build your equity even faster.

Market Value Appreciation

You also build equity as your home gains in value over time; this appreciation in market value can mean that you build equity simply by owning your home. Of course there are no guarantees that real estate values will continue to rise, but historically this has been the case. If your home is worth $250,000 and the market appreciates by 5% each year then after just two years you could add $25,000 in equity simply by living there.

Equity doesn?t have to be an abstract concept; you can turn it into cash by applying for a home equity loan which uses the equity in your home as security and in many cases allows you to deduct the interest from your taxes, just as you do with your first mortgage. Home equity loans are usually a cheaper source of funds than other types of credit (credit cards, for example) and can be an excellent way to pay for home renovation or to consolidate debt.

ConocoPhillips 3Q profit falls 30 percent

HOUSTON (AP) ? ConocoPhillips said Thursday that net income fell 30 percent in the third quarter as it sold assets and oil and natural gas prices fell.

Still, the oil and gas company's earnings were far better than Wall Street estimates, and its stock price rose almost 2 percent in morning trading.

Houston-based ConocoPhillips made $1.8 billion, or $1.46 per share, compared with $2.6 billion, or $1.91 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue was down 9.6 percent to $15.1 billion.

Excluding one-time asset sales and tax law changes in the United Kingdom, ConocoPhillips made $1.44 per share for the quarter. Analysts polled by FactSet expected earnings of $1.19 per share on revenue of $9.98 billion.

Chairman and CEO Ryan Lance said his company performed well in its first quarter as an exploration and production company. ConocoPhillips spun off its downstream business, which includes refineries and pipelines, earlier this year. It is now called Phillips 66.

"Our production was on target, our growth projects and drilling programs are on track," Lance said in a statement.

During the first nine months of the year, the company got $2.1 billion from asset sales, and it remains on track to get $8 billion to $10 billion by the end of next year, Lance said. ConocoPhillips expects annual production and margin growth of 3 to 5 percent, said Lance, who took over the company from Jim Mulva in the second quarter.

The company said realized crude oil prices fell 3.6 percent to $102.72 per barrel, compared with the third quarter of 2011. Natural gas prices dropped 16 percent to $4.56 per thousand cubic feet. Prices for other liquid hydrocarbons such as natural gas liquids fell during the quarter as well.

ConocoPhillips has been aggressively selling refineries, pipelines and other assets over the past few years to remake itself as an independent oil and gas producer.

During the third quarter, overall oil production declined by 0.8 percent.

ConocoPhillips shares rose $1.23, or 2.2 percent, to $57.18 in Thursday morning trading.
