Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman OKs new Keystone XL route

LINCOLN, Neb. ? Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman on Tuesday approved a new route for the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline that avoids the state's environmentally sensitive Sandhills but passes over the Ogallala aquifer, a massive groundwater supply.

The Republican governor sent a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton saying he would allow the pipeline to proceed through his state.

Pipeline opponents have urged the president to deny a federal permit for the project, which is required because the Canada-to-Texas pipeline crosses an international border. Obama rejected the original proposal last year but later agreed to let construction begin on a southern leg starting in Cushing, Okla.

The project has faced some of its strongest resistance in Nebraska from a coalition of landowners and environmental groups that says it would contaminate the aquifer.

The company behind the pipeline, TransCanada, has agreed to keep the project out of the Sandhills, a region of erodible, grass-covered sand dunes. But Heineman said in his letter that the new, 195-mile route would cross a small part of the aquifer.

The pipeline's critics remain firmly opposed.

"Gov. Heineman just performed one of the biggest flip-flops that we've seen in Nebraska political history," said Jane Kleeb, executive director of the group Bold Nebraska.

TransCanada's pipeline is designed to carry tar sands oil from Canada across Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The company also has proposed connecting it to the Bakken oil field in Montana and North Dakota.

New Self-Improvement Book Teaches About Ancient Wisdom - PRLog

PRLog (Press Release) - Jan. 23, 2013 - New Self-Improvement Book Teaches About Ancient Wisdom, Spirituality and Their World

New self-improvement book about Taoist inspired spirituality just released by licensed practitioner of Chinese Medicine, Jean-Marie Paglia.

The Way For Mankind is an analysis of the world's present condition seen from a spiritual vantage point. The author's holistic view exposes the major problems facing the world today: arms budgets, twisted democracy, nuclear energy, overpopulation, giant cities, etc. and allows them to consider what the solutions might be.

Paglia believes no one can do this without the coherent and unified vision of the world that can be found in ancient knowledge such as the tradition of Tao.

He goes on to say, "This ageless wisdom offers a profound and little-known understanding of the origin and structure of the world. It gives us the means to understand what we are, what our destiny might be and how we might best live. Among the leads to follow to get us out of the mess we have created is the realization that our way of thinking is flawed when we restrict ourselves to rational thought at the expense of the mystical intimations necessary to save us and for us to be truly ourselves."

Gain a true understanding of original wisdom and how it can affect and change your life

in, "The Way for Mankind."

White veins of Mars: Curiosity hits 'a jackpot' in quest for wetter past

Curiosity rover has found mineral-filled fissures in the rocks of Gale Crater on Mars. Together with other evidence, the minerals suggest that the rocks were once 'saturated with water.'

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / January 15, 2013

An outcrop shows well-defined veins filled with whitish minerals, interpreted as calcium sulfate, in this photo taken by NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars.

White veins of minerals coursing through rocks on the floor of Mars's Gale Crater are providing some of the strongest evidence yet that the rover Curiosity's landing site once was a wetter, warmer place.

The details are still fuzzy. But the composition of the minerals indicate that they precipitated out of water flowing through fissures in the rock, while large grains within the rocks themselves are rounded, suggesting that water might have dulled their sharp edges.

Yellowknife Bay, the rocky expanse Curiosity currently inhabits, "is literally shot through with these fractures," says John Grotzinger, a geologist at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena., Calif., and the mission's chief scientist.

It also features abundant, berry-shaped spherules that scientists say are sedimentary concretions formed in and worked over by water.?

All together, "basically these rocks were saturated with water," Dr. Grotzinger explained during a briefing Tuesday outlining the rover's latest exploits.

Yellowknife Bay represents "a jackpot unit," he added. Initially, researchers thought they might have to drive Curiosity up on the shoulders of Mt. Sharp, a towering summit in the middle of the crater, to find such a trove.

If Curiosity made these finds on Mt. Sharp, "we would have been absolutely thrilled," Grotzinger says.

Curiosity, a one-ton geochemistry lab on wheels, landed on Mars in August. Its goal is to see if the crater at one time could have been hospitable for simple forms of organic life. Curiosity has spent the last six months exercising its suite of 10 instruments and its seven-foot robotic arm in a series of tests aimed at ensuring all the hardware is working well before the rover heads for Mt. Sharp, its ultimate destination.

The rover probably won't begin to explore Mt. Sharp for another year.

Curiosity has traveled slightly more than a quarter of a mile, as the crow flies, since landing. Along the way, however, scientists have chosen targets for instrument tests that have already provided insights into the crater's geologic past ? including evidence for an ancient stream bed.

Megan Fox Gives Up Twitter Account, Likes Facebook

Megan Fox doesn?t speak much on the social-networking sites, but the actress told her fans that there?s no reason to have a Twitter account and didn?t see any point to maintaining it when she already has millions of followers on Facebook.

Megan Fox

?I?m incredibly late to the party but I?m here nonetheless, so what now?? Fox said on January 4, when she created her official page. However, just five days later she didn?t see any point in it.

?5 days on Twitter and I have yet to discern it?s purpose. #WhatIsThePoint ???? Fox wrote.

We can only guess that Megan?s page won?t last long, but she still amassed more than 260,000 Twitter followers, which is decent.

However, the decision to pull the plug on her account shouldn?t be surprising, because she has tried to keep a private life, and even though she does have a Facebook page, she rarely uses it.

Fox did announce the birth of her first child on Facebook, but she posted it several weeks after giving birth, keeping her personal life private to prevent media speculation.

Fox named her child Noah Shannon, and he is ?healthy, happy, and perfect,? as she wrote on her page at the time.

?We are humbled to have the opportunity to call ourselves the parents of this beautiful soul and I am forever grateful to God for allowing me to know this kind of boundless, immaculate love,? Fox also said.

The actress is quite different than other celebrities, keeping a low profile and posting little, if not at all. But this could be a good thing because whenever Fox does make a post, it?s newsworthy, and it does get a lot of attention.

New construction site sediment pollution regulations in effect ...

You are here: Home / Chesapeake Bay / New construction site sediment pollution regulations in effect

FoFC received this notice from Community & Environmental Defense Services:

Construction site sediment pollution?regulations?

Protect All Exposed Soils 7 Days After Clearance

Among the most important new requirements is that all exposed construction site soils must be protected from erosive forces within seven days of initial clearance.??For most of a site, this means all disturbed areas must be covered with a layer of mulch (straw, etc.) sufficiently thick to obscure underlying soils.??An equally important new requirement is that 95% vegetative (grass) cover must be achieved.?

Silt Fence & Settling Ponds Can?t Protect The Bay; Only Thick Mulch & Grass

In the past most sites might have a sparse cover of grass and mulch resulting in vast quantities of eroded soil flowing into nearby waters.??It takes thick mulch and 95% cover to prevent pollution of nearby waters.??Perimeter measures like black silt fence and settling ponds simply can?t retain enough mud pollution on-site.??In fact, whenever you see exposed soil on a construction site, you can assume pollution will occur come the next storm.??In other words:?Exposed Soil = Pollution.??Please report it at the?Watershed Advocates Construction ES=P Database?and/or to your?local enforcement agency.

Sites Present Before March Must Have 95% Grass Cover By April 15th

Of course grass will not begin growing until March with another two- to four-weeks needed to achieve 95% cover.??If a site was cleared prior to March, yet by April 15th?you see something less than 95% grass cover then you are also witnessing a violation of one of our most important aquatic resource protection laws.??Again, please report it promptly!??This is the best way to ensure this new law is fully enforced and the Bay and her tributaries are fully protected.

France to pursue Mali mission, raise domestic security

PARIS (Reuters) - France will pursue operations in Mali to prepare a subsequent African-led intervention to oust Islamist rebels and will step up anti-terrorist security measures on its own territory, President Francois Hollande said on Saturday.

As French aircraft pounded rebel fighters for a second day, Hollande said he had given instructions that the several hundred French troops sent to Mali must keep their actions strictly limited to supporting a West African ECOWAS operation.

"We have already held back the progress of our adversaries and inflicted heavy losses on them. But our mission is not over yet," Hollande said, a day after French forces launched air strikes and reinforced the capital Bamako to pre-empt a feared rebel advance towards the city.

One French pilot was killed in Friday's air strikes, in a blow to the start of a campaign which represents Hollande's biggest foreign policy test since his May election.

France also lost a commando and a secret agent held hostage since 2009 in a raid in Somalia on Saturday, an operation Hollande said had been planned several days ago. His defence minister said earlier that the operations were unrelated.

"This operation confirms France's determination not to give in to the blackmail of terrorists," Hollande said of the Somalia incident. "In the days ahead, we will pursue our intervention in Mali," he told a news conference.

Concerned about reprisals on French soil, Hollande said he had asked his prime minister to reinforce security in public buildings and on public transport as quickly as possible.

93% Amour

All Critics (115) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (107) | Rotten (8)

The film is a graphic portrayal of the unfunny end game we're all fated to play; the title is just a simple declaration of how best to play it.

"Amour" is also unforgettable and one of a kind, two hours of torment that, in the end, you will probably not regret.

Small, sure and stunningly acted, this is a picture of exacting control, which is to be expected from Haneke, whose works include Cache and The White Ribbon.

[Haneke] has put his finger on a very particular kind of heartbreak: seeing a lover give up not on you but on the life you've shared.

Amour is the simplest yet most passionate film of Haneke's incredible career.

As it unflinchingly faces mortality, Amour is full of incomparably beautiful and sad moments.

Powerful and well-acted, this drama meticulously captures the pain and perils of aging in a way that will be hard to forget.

Haneke treats Georges and Anne with absolute respect, never pandering to sentiment or clich? and most assuredly not sugarcoating the experience of walking one's partner through suffering, toward death.

Haneke doesn't offer easy solutions or pat emotions. He merely offers us a chance to eavesdrop and holds a mirror up to our own fears of old age, hopes for love, and challenges through life.

A confident, lovingly articulated mood piece about a subject that is universal, yet rarely told.

A masterpiece of restraint, intelligence and humanity.

Often looks and hurts like seeing real lives in real time. Is that enough? Honesty gradually becomes simplicity as the film's reality outweighs its insight.

The most brutally honest picture ever made about growing old and wasting away.

The story is heart-breaking in its honest depiction of life near the end.

The film has been declared a masterpiece by many, and yet the director's inability to put aside his usual chilly remove encases "Amour's" protagonists under glass.

Haneke, a master of icy appraisal, here contemplates an elderly Parisian couple at the very end of their lives.

An examination of life and death, this minimalist film succeeds on all levels.

Is Your Business Online? Learn The Tips To Successful Internet ...

Every so often, we have an idea that could make a great business. The resources you can find on the Internet can make it possible to transform such ideas into a business, and it also offers you one of the most cost-effective marketing channels in the world. The tips presented below can help you get off to a great start in the field of Internet marketing.

The anonymous nature of doing business online can seem impersonal. This is a good idea for small and independent businesses especially. Smaller companies rely on repeat business and a personalized touch with their customers to be successful.

Use viral videos to get huge numbers of visitors to your site. You will need to test your brain and think a little unconventionally if you want to make a video that can hold the attention of thousands or maybe millions of people. This extra traffic will make your business really take off.

Think about things that you can offer to visitors to your site for free. Visitors who come for the freebie might check out the rest of your site if you get their attention. Many business accomplish this by providing a free calculation tool relevant to the product for sale.

One way to increase the number of clicks on your ads is to link product images to a separate page that contains information about the product. Ensure you use the font that you use in your articles and linking it. When done right, your visitor will not see an ad, just clickable text.

Expect to have to pay for a high-quality domain name. It?s probably going to be difficult to get the domain name that matches your company name. If you can afford to invest up to $2,000, you may be able to register a domain name that is a close substitute.

Putting free samples and coupons inside the boxes when you ship customers orders that are related to the product is a great idea. This gives your customers a good reason to return, and also shows that you appreciate their business.

With any kind of marketing, you are going to run into setbacks. The best thing to do is deal with them and keep on going. If you stop, all of your effort will have been for nothing. Make sure you have everything ready to go when you are ready to get started in your venture. Often times, you will have to work very hard. Keep your focus on your end result and realize that your hard work will pay off.

Make sure that you leave yourself open to receiving feedback and suggestions. It is important because your personal perception of pricing or site design may not be that of the customers. Ask peers, family members and your potential clients for feedback. Use their advice to improve your website.

If you make the effort to bring in experts in your field for interviews, you can make the results into outstanding content with a powerful Internet marketing effect. These interviews could be text-only, or you may post videos or audio instead. Your interview will increase your own reputation through osmosis, and really high-profile interviewees will bring along fresh visitors with them, boosting your website?s traffic.

Receiving and sustaining your customer?s trust is imperative. Your promotions and marketing efforts must be based in fact. Show test results, client testimonials, and expert endorsements if your feel that it is needed.

Letting customers sign up to receive your Ezine is quite effective as an online marketing method, particularly if you understand how to go about creating an Ezine that enables you to relate well to your customers. Establish rapport with your readers by adding personal photos. Write facts about your personal life that people can relate to. When you use a title that sparks their interest, they will be more likely to click!

As stated in the beginning of the article, longevity is the goal for any business. You most likely want to be in business for years and years. Every business starts at the bottom, so implement these tips to increase business today.

Now that you have all of this great advice on online or internet marketing, it is time for you to put it all to good use. While it?s hard to learn new concepts, you should know the basics now. If you keep putting in the time, you?ll eventually be as knowledgeable as the pros.

Trending 2013: The ?Social Franchise? ? Franchisors Are Opening ...

Money Image

Austin, TX, January 10, 2013 ?(PR.com)? Dr. Benjamin C. Litalien, the nation?s foremost authority on social franchising, and the founder and principal of Franchise Well, LLC, is predicting that more franchisors will see the benefit this year of adding non-profit organizations as franchisees.

?Non-profit organizations will increasingly understand the advantages of running for-profit businesses as subsidiaries. The clear choice for many non-profits, when it comes to running a business for bottom-line profits, is a franchise,? says Litalien, who speaks to hundreds of non-profit executives annually about franchising.

His research on ?social franchising? suggests that a franchise is often the quickest and easiest path to success. The non-profit organization is not ?going it alone? or trying to reinvent the wheel. The franchise model provides operational guidelines and resources to shorten the non-profit?s learning curve. The franchisor, which has a proven business, is only a phone call away whenever needed.

A for-profit subsidiary can generate profits to support the non-profit?s primary charitable mission. A franchise business is also an ideal way to train and help at-risk youth, the disabled, and other ?clientele? of the organization ? by putting them to work and giving them a supervised, structured, real-world environment within which to learn job and life skills.

In short, franchisors and non-profits are ideally positioned to collaborate for mutual benefit. The non-profit universe opens up a huge market of prospective franchisees for the franchisor. According to Litalien, many non-profits are well-heeled, mature operations with significant assets at their disposal, strong management teams, strategic leadership, and community clout.

Franchisors are waking up to this fact, and Litalien thinks 2013 will be a pivotal year for many more of these strategic ?marriages.?

Litalien was recently introduced to Qvinci Software and realized it addressed a missing link for many franchise companies in managing their data across their networks. ?I rarely endorse any product, and then only if it?s best of breed. Qvinci qualifies. Too many franchisors, franchisees and non-profit networks do not fully understand the value of their data. Qvinci uncovers that value.?

He added, ?Qvinci collects and syncs data from one location to thousands, in the cloud, automatically. Then it gives the user an interface to see the data unit-by-unit and consolidated, with numerous business-intelligence tools that make it easy to compare units, spot trouble spots, and see where the best results are happening so those can be duplicated and increased. Any franchisor that seeks to be best in class must have this capability, and any non-profit organization with multiple sites/operations must pursue better control over its data.?

Charles Nagel, the CEO of Qvinci Software, stated ?[w]e are pleased to have formed a strategic alliance with FranchiseWell. Ben recognizes the value of data for franchises and non-profits, and he saw the same gaping hole that we did ? most SMBs don?t access or use their data in ways that help them now. We give them a roadmap to make better decisions, proactively, instead of reacting at the end of the month, quarter, or year and wondering what went wrong or how it happened.?

Nagel added, ?[w]e believe in Ben?s social-franchising message and recognize his stature in the industry. We look forward to working with him to help more SMBs ? franchisors, franchisees, and non-profits ? gain control and mastery of their data. Maximizing revenues, minimizing expenses, and avoiding killer mistakes are critical business practices in this fragile economic environment.?

Nagel concluded, ?[w]hether or not any particular business chooses our solution, we hope our 'evangelizing' on the importance of timely and digestible data spurs more companies to take action. If even one company turns a would-be loss into a profit and stays in business, employing workers, our drum beating will have made a difference. If a bunch of them do it, we?ll be really happy.?

About Qvinci Software:

Qvinci Software is the creator of Qvinci?, an industry-leading, cloud-based solution that automatically syncs and consolidates an unlimited number of QuickBooks? files and other data, wherever located, in seconds, in an enterprise-class interface that gives the user a vast array of tools to analyze and act on the data, for better decisions and competitive advantage. Intuit? has selected Qvinci? as the financial reporting/business intelligence application for its Franchise Solution Program.

ORLEANS ? The man charged with burning down the Cape Cod Bible Alliance Church was in court Thursday, but the judge delayed any action pending further evaluation on his competency to stand trial.

Adam Finnegan, 29, has been held without bail at Bridgewater State Hospital, which treats, evaluates and holds suspects with potential mental illness, since his arrest for allegedly destroying the 320-member church on Route 6A in Brewster.

The church burned to the ground Nov. 30. Police allege that Finnegan, who has a history of mental illness, briefly left his parents' home on Blueberry Pond Drive early that morning and set the fire. The Finnegans' home is less than two miles from the church.

A dangerousness hearing was scheduled for Thursday, but Orleans District Judge Brian Merrick delayed it until Feb. 4 after Finnegan's attorney argued that the competency evaluation by the state hospital was incomplete.

Attorney Colleen Duarte argued for an extra 20 days at the state hospital.
Merrick agreed.

?They say he's kind of competent but maybe not,? Merrick said, summing up the hospital's evaluation.

?They just need more time,? Duarte said.

Once the hospital's report is conclusive, Merrick will rule if Finnegan is competent.
In the dangerousness hearing, Merrick must decide if poses a danger to the community. Finnegan could be held without bail as a result.

Naomi Campbell Mugged In Paris, Suffers Leg Injury

You would think that everyone would have learned by now: You don't mess with Naomi Campbell.

But that didn't stop a band of "thugs" who attacked and mugged the supermodel in Paris over a month ago. The New York Post reports that Campbell was trying to hail a cab when she was toppled over and robbed. The model tore a ligament in her leg, which explains the crutches and wheelchair she'd been spotted using over the past few weeks.

The incident, which has only now come to light, was reported to French police for investigation. The attackers have not yet been caught nor is it clear what they took from her, "but it?s believed they were targeting expensive jewelry she may have been wearing," states the Post.

This isn't the first time Campbell has been associated with a mugging. In 2007, news outlets reported that she'd been robbed at a Led Zeppelin concert in London; TMZ later reported that the story was false and she had simply lost her Blackberry.

Which, as we all know, is not the first Naomi incident involving a phone.

It seems Campbell is making a full recovery, vacationing in Miami and tweeting up a storm as usual. Read more at NYPost.com.

Infantry now shut to women; do they want it open?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? If or when the Pentagon lets women become infantry troops ? the country's front-line warfighters ? how many women will want to?

The answer is probably not many.

Interviews with a dozen female soldiers and Marines showed little interest in the toughest fighting jobs. They believe they'd be unable to do them, even as the Defense Department inches toward changing its rules to allow women in direct ground combat jobs.

In fact, the Marines asked women last year to go through its tough infantry officer training to see how they would fare. Only two volunteered and both failed to complete the fall course. None has volunteered for the next course this month. The failure rate for men is roughly 25 percent.

For the record, plenty of men don't want to be in the infantry either, though technically could be assigned there involuntarily, if needed. That's rarely known to happen.

"The job I want to do in the military does not include combat arms," Army Sgt. Cherry Sweat said of infantry, armor and artillery occupations. She installed communications equipment in 2008 in Iraq but doesn't feel mentally or physically prepared for fighting missions.

"I enjoy supporting the soldiers," said Sweat, stationed in South Carolina. "The choice to join combat arms should be a personal decision, not a required one."

Added Marine Gunnery Sgt. Shanese L. Campbell, who had administrative duties during her service in Iraq: "I actually love my job. ... I've been doing it for 15 years, so I don't plan on changing my job skills."

She's an administrative officer at Twentynine Palms in California, serving in a once all-male tank battalion as part of a Marine Corps experiment to study how opening more jobs to women might work.

A West Point graduate working in the Pentagon estimates she's known thousands of women over her 20-year army career and said there's no groundswell of interest in combat jobs among female colleagues she knows.

She asked to remain anonymous because in the military's warrior culture, it's a sensitive issue to be seen as not wanting to fight, she said. But her observations echoed research of the 1990s, another time of big change in the military, when interviews with more than 900 Army women found that most didn't want fighting jobs and many felt the issue was being pushed by "feminists" not representing the majority, said RAND Corporation sociologist Laura Miller.

Much has happened for women since then in American society and the military. Foremost in the military is perhaps that the Iraq and Afghanistan wars changed the face of combat and highlighted the need for women to play new roles.

Women already can be assigned to some combat arms jobs such as operating the Patriot missile system or field artillery radar, but offensive front-line fighting jobs will be the hardest nut to crack. Many believe women eventually could be in the infantry, but the Pentagon for years has been moving slowly on that front.

In April 1993, the Pentagon directed the opening of combat aviation occupations and warship assignments to females; the Navy and Air Force responded by opening thousands of jobs. Neither of those steps put women in the most lethal occupations such as infantry or tank units. Policy barred them not only from specific jobs but also from doing traditional jobs in smaller units closest to the front.

That arrangement came apart in Iraq and Afghanistan, where battle lines were jagged and insurgents could be anywhere. Some women in support jobs, including logistics officers bringing supply convoys to troops, found themselves in firefights or targeted by roadside bombs. Women were sent on patrol with men to search and get information from local women whose culture didn't allow male soldiers to do so.

Developments over the past decade have been a main argument from those wanting more openings for women. So has the issue of equal opportunity and the fact that combat service gives troops an advantage for promotions, the lack of it leaving women disadvantaged in trying to move to the higher ranks.

"If there are women able to meet the required standard, then why not let them fight if they so desire?" said Maj. Elizabeth L. Alexander. Since 2002, she hass served in Pakistan once and Iraq three times in supply and maintenance jobs and is now with the 3rd Army in South Carolina.

More than 200,000 U.S. women have served in the wars, 12 percent of the Americans sent. Of some 6,600 Americans killed, 152 were women; 84 of them were killed by enemy action and 68 in nonhostile circumstances such as accidents, illness and suicide.

In February, the department altered rules to reflect realities of the decade, opening some new jobs and officially allowing women into many jobs they were already doing, but in units closer to the fighting. The new policy still bans women from being infantry soldiers, Special Operations commandos, and others in direct combat, but opened some 14,000 previously male-only positions, mostly in the Army, such as artillery mechanic and rocket launcher crew member. More than 230,000 positions remain closed to women, who are 15 percent of the 1.4 million in all branches.

Hundreds of female soldiers began moving into once all-male battalions, taking jobs they already had trained for, such as in personnel, intelligence, signal corps, medicine and chaplaincy. Forty-five women Marines similarly went to battalions as part of a large research effort to gauge how women might do.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has been studying reports from the services to update him on progress with the newly opened positions, what's being done to pursue gender-neutral physical standards and what barriers remain and whether more positions can be opened.

Panetta could announce the next step in the coming weeks, which might mean anything from further openings to simply further study.

"Yes, there may be a small number of women who are interested," said Katy Otto, spokeswoman for the Service Women's Action Network, an equal opportunity advocacy group. "But does that mean they should be barred from entry?"

Lory Manning of Women's Research and Education Institute said female interest could be greater than expected.

"I think they'll be surprised by the number that will come forward," said the 25-year Navy veteran who retired in the 1990s. She said the Navy faced a similar question then: Did women want to go to sea?

"If you asked someone in 1985 about going to sea, she would have been thinking: 'Girls don't do that and so I don't want to do that,'" Manning said. "But when push came to shove, they did it, they loved it."

Changing the rules for a potential future draft would be a difficult proposition.

The Supreme Court has ruled that because the Selective Service Act is aimed at creating a list of men who could be drafted for combat ? and women are not in combat jobs ? American women aren't required to register upon turning 18 as all males are. If combat jobs open to women, Congress would have to decide what to do about that law.

Sprint confirms pay-as-you-go service, promises not to throttle speeds or cap data

Word of a Sprint pay-as-you-go service crossed our desks just yesterday in the form of a leaked slide, and now Big Yellow has confirmed to FierceWireless that the effort, dubbed Sprint As You Go, will launch on January 25th. The Now Network's new initiative will offer a $70 monthly plan for smartphones and a $50-a-month plan for feature phones. Both options won't offer premium features such as WiFi tethering and Sprint Navigation, but Sprint says customers will see neither hide nor hair of data caps or speed throttling. As for hardware, the smartphone tier includes the LTE-enabled Samsung Victory at $250 and the LG Optimus Elite for $150. On the feature phone end of the spectrum, Samsung's Array and M400 handsets are available on the service (presumably ringing up at $80 and $50, respectively). Angling to take advantage of Sprint's new offer? You'll have to forgo online shopping this time, as the firm is making the offer available exclusively through it's brick-and-mortar Sprint Stores.

Lace Up the Skates, Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Tournament is a Go ...

The recent sub-freezing temperatures may have put a chill on many outdoor events, but has organizers of the Nautical Mile Pond Hockey Winter Classic warming up plans for a weekend of games, activities and civic pride in St. Clair Shores.

Organizers decided Thursday to move forward with the outdoor hockey tournament after temperatures recently dropped enough to cause the canals next to Brownie's on the Lake to freeze. Additionally, the seven-day forecast includes nighttime temperatures dropping below freezing.

"We are a go," said Shawn Nicholson, vice-president of the St. Clair Shores Hockey Association and one of the organizers of the event. "I am a lot more confident now than I was two weeks ago."

The inaugural tournament had been planned for this past January, but unseasonably warm temperatures and a lack of ice led to the cancellation of the event.

Even with the cancellation last year, there has been strong interest in the event this year with 44 of the planned 48 teams already registered for the Jan. 25-27 tournament.

Each team, which is comprised of players 21-years-old and older, will have at least three games - with some being played under lights set-up on the ice - with semi-finals and championships on Sunday.

"I think it is going to be an event that brings the community together," said Greg Esler, parks and recreation director. "We want to make sure the hockey players, and their families feel special, and find St. Clair Shores a great place to live and maybe buy a house down the road."

For more information about the tournament, visit the Pond Hockey website.

Volunteers are also needed. For more information, visit the volunteers needed page.

Box of Kittens Found on Side of Road | FOX8.com ? Cleveland news ...

FREMONT, Ohio ? Just two days after Christmas, a Sandusky County resident found an unexpected and unfortunate gift left on the side of the road.

?The snow was coming down. It was pretty heavy. With the wind included, it was kind of treacherous out there,? said Kelly Askins, with the Humane Society of Sandusky County.? ?We got a call from a concerned citizen that on her way to work, she had saw a box on the side of the road.?

The box had been buried by the heavy snowstorm. A volunteer discovered there were four kittens inside.

?As the plows went by, they just got deeper and deeper and said if the plow went past them one more time, they would have been buried alive,? she said. ?The cats are about four months old.?

Askins is the animal cruelty investigator for the humane society, and while the case disturbs her, she said it?s becoming a trend.

The humane society has seen a spike in abuse in recent months, including three major animal hoarding cases this past year in Sandusky County.

The no-kill shelter houses about 150 dogs and cats, which is about 50 more than what they should, said Joanne McDowell, president of the humane society.

?We?d hope right now that we?d see a real change in the community, even with our low-cost programs, but there?s still way too many cats,? McDowell said. ?The cat abuse is ongoing. They?re thrown out of moving vehicles. They?re thrown out in boxes. They?re thrown out in litters. They?re drowned. It?s just really a shame.?

The kittens were likely dumped on the side of the road before the storm hit, but they are doing well, Askins said. She hopes the new arrivals ? Eeny, Meenie, Miny and Mo ? will inspire people to adopt. Mo was adopted by a family on Wednesday.

Askins said, if anything, she would like to see the community take responsibility for pet ownership and realize that an animal isn?t something to disregard.

?When you have your children, they?re your children for life. You don?t drop them off at an orphanage because the landlord where you?re moving won?t accept children,? she said. ?When you make a commitment to an animal, it?s the same type of commitment. It?s a lifetime commitment.?

The Sandusky County Humane Society is asking anyone with additional information on the kittens to contact them at (419) 334-4517 or visit their location at 2520 Port Clinton Road in Fremont.

The humane society is offering discounts on cat adoptions, starting as low as $25.

Tim & Jules: There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays!

We had an absolutely wonderful time home with family in the States for Thanksgiving and Christmas! I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to see so many I love and have so much time home.

Our trip ended up looking like this:
1 Week in Chicago (Tim presenting a paper and preaching at The Orchard, and catching up with our dear friends) Here are some of those pics. There are so many pictures I wish I would have taken, but forgot! I didn't get one pic of my LIFE group gals from church or with our time with Suzanne and her sweet family including their new lil' bundle!

But I sure did enjoy the time with everyone :)

1 Week in Philadelphia and State College for Thanksgiving with our families

1 Week in Vancouver, WA with Ryan and Kelly Beardsley while Tim preached at their church. We got to see the West Coast and the Pacific for the first time! Our parents and Tim's sister shared the load of watching the girls, so Tim and I were able to be ALONE together. It was a wonderfully refreshing time!?Here are all of the pics of our time there.
3 Weeks in Pennsylvania (split between Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, State College, Bellefonte, and Altoona) This was the most relaxing time because we were able to just BE in one place for a while and rest with family. What a wonderful opportunity! Here is an absolutely massive amount of pictures from our time in PA. These are my faves though :)

Why the US Oil Market will go from Strength to Strength in 2013

In a continuation of our series on the state of the oil industry we look at some of the other ramifications of what we are labelling the Oil Renaissance in the US, and around the world for that matter.? This phrase was first proposed regarding the potential Nuclear turnaround here in the US, where companies like NRG Energy, Toshiba and many more players all along the supply chain were positioning themselves for the Nuclear Renaissance of cheap, and abundant Nuclear energy for the next 50 years.

Well, the natural disaster in Japan changed that movement in the span of a week of just untenable radioactivity readings coming out of Japan.? An already uphill battle for changing public sentiment towards the dangers of nuclear energy became an impractical fight from an investment standpoint that relied upon large DOE loan guarantees to attract private investment.

It is ironic, but all these companies spent a lot of time and effort from lobbying to developing strategic partnerships with each other, and in the end, most of that 7 year effort had to be written off by firms. It really shows how firms have to get the industry right; Oil was so much the smarter play. Higher margins, better technology, much easier safety hurdles, and even the environmental fight is much more manageable.

Not to mention the number of jobs created is far more with an Oil Renaissance as opposed to a Nuclear Renaissance, even with a complete buildup of the entire nuclear supply chain. Nuclear projects are just not scalable like oil projects are from a numbers standpoint due to the regulation, lead times for components, inspection, build times, and many more constraints.

No DOE Loan Guarantees: The Free Market at Work

We are going to have a Renaissance in this country, it just happened under everyone`s nose. The free market of high oil prices for the last 10 years made it happen all on its own without government subsidies, and part of the reason that things are going to get real tough for the alternative energy folks over the next 5 years as those government subsidies wind down. They will not make sense from an economic standpoint once oil prices come down considerably, and from a budgetary perspective we can no longer afford this propping up industries that cannot sustain themselves on their own merit in the free market. A 16 trillion dollar debt and climbing means the environmentalists will now be facing an uphill fight on Capitol Hill to have their cause funded by the American taxpayer.

Technology Changes: Heart Surgery meets the Oil Patch

The technology changes alone in the oil industry are amazing; just watch a horizontal drilling or fracking video and it is like all the advances made by the medical community for endoscopic procedures and advanced heart surgical techniques have been applied to the oil industry. And the cost is far more manageable than the medical field with all the added insurance costs, out of control bureaucracy, and government intervention all but eliminating any sense of free market principles.

Sure these constraints exist in the oil industry, but the healthcare industry is on a planet of its own and worse from a cost efficiency standpoint by a factor of at least a 100. There is not an ounce of free market in the healthcare industry!

Fracking Diagram
Fracking Diagram

We haven`t seen anything yet as this new technology being refined and implemented here in the US will then be fully scalable around the globe, and the amount of new projects that will come online globally with this new technology over the next ten years has yet to be priced into any market intelligence models.

Natural Gas Industry as the Model

The natural gas industry is much smaller than the oil industry, and because of the new technology firms were actually continuing production with $2 natural gas because of much lower overall project costs relative to the size of the gas exploitable and other derivative products made along the way enabling? these projects to be profitable.

The oil industry is much more scalable from a cost standpoint, and once these upfront costs have been committed, the size of the industry and scalability means that projects can continue and be highly profitable even with much lower oil prices.

I previously have thought that this technology would suffer as prices drop, but I am rethinking this assumption with natural gas as my guide in a much less scalable industry. So I now believe that this technology and these projects will continue and be cost effective even with oil dropping to $45 a barrel for both Brent and WTI.

Slant & Horizontal Drilling
Slant & Horizontal Drilling

It won`t happen overnight, but under one scenario prices will just steadily trend down like natural gas prices, and before we realize it we have the equivalent of $2 natural gas prices for the oil industry.

The China Factor: Use less Commodities for Next Decade

My assumption about the trajectory of oil prices also relies on the China factor that many analysts have been toying with for the last couple of years, but the IMF and others have done some nice research on and applied some hard numbers to the conceptual idea that China has overinvested for the last decade by a large degree, and most of the previous forecasts for China`s growth trajectory from an infrastructure standpoint for the next 10 years are far too optimistic.

My conclusion is that China will use far less commodities than they did the past decade going forward for the next decade. They are coming into the constraints of large numbers where you have built for the sake of building, and you can no longer build another large new city every year because the demand just isn`t there. Basically, the easy, low hanging fruit has been eaten. Most of the new project benefits will not justify the cost based upon infrastructure constraints, logistical incongruities, and actual demand & societal need for said projects.

The societal costs outweigh the societal benefits and the projects evaluated in total become a net drag on growth and GDP in the overall calculus. China can go ahead with these projects but the law of diminishing returns, means the country will pay a heavy price to do so. China will continue to grow, but they will grow in a more sophisticated way from a social perspective from within, i.e. in a metaphorical Maslow`s ? Hierarchy of Needs manner, and less of a brute, infrastructure driven manner.

Ergo, the lower utilization for commodities by China is another factor that will put downward pressure on Oil and other commodities over the next 5 to 10 years.

More Storage Capacity Needed Globally

Make no mistake these oil and commodity projects are going to go full stream regardless of price due to sunk costs, more efficient operations, job creation, and overall profitability.

One of the takeaways out of this analysis is that storage facilities will have to be upgraded and new ones coming online for all commodities. For example in Oil, my analysis concludes that Cushing will need to upgrade capacity to over 100 million in the next couple of years, and over 150 million by 5 years? time.

My new analysis determines the need for even more pipelines being built out of Cushing as well. There will need to be at least 5 million barrels per day outflow from Cushing to refineries by five years? time; can anyone say job creation opportunities here?

The next substantial upgrade besides the paltry 300,000 per/day upgrade this year will not come online until mid-2014 and only improve capacity to 850,000 barrels per/day outflow from Cushing which is not going to be enough to counter an exponential measure of domestic production coming into the Cushing energy hub by 2014.

But I am forecasting that not only will Cushing be above 100 million in storage in three years? time, but the US will need capacity to store over 600 million barrels by four years? time, and China who is building storage currently, will need to meet their own need for storage due to a massive oversupply in their country.

China was building storage initially for strategic purposes, but my analysis concludes that because of an oversupply issue similar to copper today in China, they are going to need this additional storage for excess supply issues.

?Therefore, if you?re in the storage facility business, times will be good for the next five years, plenty of business for these firms. As I think storage facilities will have to be built all around the world from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Africa, and the Scandinavian countries.

A New Price Model for Oil

So how low can prices go? Let`s just say that the Renaissance in oil is going to be good for the global economy, just back in 2003 gasoline prices were $1.60 a gallon in the US and oil was trading around $30 a barrel.

It is not unreasonable to think if the Oil Renaissance takes the path that it is capable of that Oil globally trades all the way down to the $45 area.

What Price do the Saudi`s Really Need? Need & Want Confused

And those that think that OPEC would need $75 to keep up production, remember that OPEC still kept pumping oil only four years ago with $33 oil in 2008. Furthermore, OPEC countries still need the overall revenue not the price per say.

Accordingly, you could very easily have a scenario where prices go lower and they pump more, violate reduction quotas because they all want the revenue net of volume and price, not just less volume but slightly higher prices.

I think the world will be surprised how the talking your book rhetoric of ?we need $75 oil to justify production? is replaced with the actual, ?we need the money and our real cost is so much lower than you could ever imagine? reality on the ground.

This is their one asset in these countries, some revenue stream is better than no revenue stream, and with global production picking up OPEC `s relevance, power, and influence on prices is diminishing by the day.

Great OPEC you can reduce production, your global competitors will love that, less competition for them. The only problem is that these countries need the money, every country needs the money these days, and that`s the market place you take what you can get on the market! The market goes in cycles, just as the housing market re-priced itself, so will the oil market!

The ironic point here is that often the lower prices go, the more oil that is produced trying to make up in volume for the lower price to get as much revenue as possible.

$45 Oil & $2 Gasoline: Consumers Love this New Era

In conclusion, we are entering a new Renaissance in the oil market, not just in the US, but globally as well.

New technology, slower growth in the emerging markets over the next decade, and an era where a decade of high prices will finally bear some fruit with market dynamics working as their supposed to leading to more supply, and an eventual reduction in prices.

Expect this new era to manifest itself in giving the entire world a tax break, and small businesses and consumers worldwide will have more disposable income, and sectors such as retail, entertainment, transportation, and global travel will benefit as a result of this sea change in the oil industry.

I could even envision the manufacturing industry in the US getting a large piggyback effect as the US will have some of the cheapest energy costs of anywhere in the world for starting a business with an abundance of natural gas, oil and petroleum products for the next decade at a low and stable price.
How does $45 a barrel oil and $2 a gallon gas sound? Something the peak oil folks thought was an outright impossibility just 5 years ago.

But a lot of things can change real fast, once technology gets involved, impossible things become possible. Just look at smartphones versus 4 years ago, and the fact that I can deposit a check into my checking account via my smartphone, actually surf the net, get usable navigation directions, and watch Netflix movies on my smartphone.

The world history of scientific innovation being applied to markets is remarkable to say the least looking back, it?s now time for the oil market to have its second renaissance. Expect $45 oil in the future of this renaissance.

Recommendations for a healthy New Year - Lehigh Valley Health Blog

December 31, 2012

Posted by Milton Carrero at 08:15:57 AM on December 31, 2012

As we welcome the New Year, I'd like to take a moment to thank you for following my stories in this section since I began two years ago. As a reward for keeping me company, I would like to share a few of the lessons I've learned from writing about people like you.

First, health is our natural state of being, and it includes mind, body, and spirit. Most of the people I've interviewed who enjoy perfect health, even during their late years, appear to be balanced in these three areas.

They don't just eat well and exercise, they are aware of their emotions, their level of stress and they have found a spiritual guide within themselves that affects how they see the world. There have been some exceptions, but the healthiest and happiest people I've interviewed take time to pray, meditate and enjoy nature. This affects their mood and the way they relate with others.

So as you seek to become healthier this year, take time to dwell within to find that spiritual center in which ever way you choose.

Science agrees that many of our diseases are?psychosomatic, influenced in some way by our emotions, our level of stress, previous traumas and experiences. Unsolved emotional problems continue to affect our decisions until we face them.

Take time in your day to address these areas and re-affirm your self worth.

Body and mind are equally affected by what we feed them. Be mindful of what you give your mind to eat. Just as much as you should pay attention to what you eat. What you give your mind can affect your body as much as what you give your body can affect the mind.?

Eating fruits and vegetables and exercising, nourishes your body. Exposing yourself to inspiring information and invigorating ideas will influence the way you think throughout the day, which will impact your emotions and in turn your words and actions.

Do what you enjoy everyday. Chances are you'll live longer or happier. And happiness is healthy in its own right.?

Before you begin house-hunting, examine your credit report. Once you?ve gotten a copy of the report, examine each entry to find out if there are any mistakes. The better your credit score, the more likely you will be to obtain a mortgage with rates that are reasonable.

Before you run out and purchase a property simply because you like the way it looks, you should first stand back and examine the home as a whole. You should only consider buying a home based on it?s construction and shape. Only paying attention to the home?s decor can lead to costly problems that you neglected to notice.

You need to be organized if you are going to try to buy a house. Keep a journal or notebook of the information and advice you find from all sources. With a handy reference notebook, it will be easy to find the information you seek.

TIP! Go to an expert for help finding investment properties. Real estate agents and brokers can help guide you in the right direction when you are searching for property to invest in.

Financial Incentives

When making the offer on your dream home, you can ask the seller if they will help out with the closing costs, or give you other financial incentives. It is common to ask the seller to ?buy down? the interest rate for a year or two. Adding financial incentives to offers will make sellers less willing to negotiate selling prices.

It is important to properly communicate with real estate investors. They may know of a property that isn?t right for them, but may be perfect for you. This is the perfect way to find that one of a kind property that hasn?t yet been snapped up.

TIP! If you are looking at signing a lease on a rental property with a garden, ask your landlord whose responsibility it is to maintain the garden. Some rental properties expect the renter to maintain the outdoor living space or to hire help to take care of it.

If you get any home you are looking to buy appraised, accept an appraiser with no less than five years of experience. Hire an independent appraiser that is not recommended by your real estate agent. There might be a conflict of interest there. The appraiser that you hire must be state-certified or state-licensed.

If you want to have a good return on your property, try to do some remodeling. The good thing is that you will get a good profit from your investment when you repair a fixer. Sometimes your property value will increase more than the money you put in.

Don?t come on too strong in purchase negotiations. Lots of people try to be overly aggressive only to lose out in the end. However, you should always stand firm on your wants. Allow your lawyer and Realtor to attend negotiations because they have experience in negotiating.

TIP! Real estate agents should keep in contact with former clients over the holidays and on the anniversaries of their home-buying. When you contact them, they will recall how you helped them with their real estate experience.

When you are looking into real estate, understand that this could be your home for a long time. While you might not have kids currently, for instance, it?s a good idea to check into the local schools near a potential house if you are planning to have children down the road.

If you are going to purchase a house, hire the workforce that you need on your own. You may be tempted to use the team provided by the seller, especially since there is normally no cost to you. You may think it is silly to spend money for services that could be procured at no cost. Nevertheless, you can benefit greatly from hiring your own professionals who are trustworthy and will be working for your best interests. This is one situation where learning the truth can potentially save you thousands of dollars and much heartache.

Before purchasing a home, it is highly recommended you have an inspector perform an inspection on the home. The last thing you want to do is to move into a house that immediately needs significant work. In addition to wasting your money, you might even have to rent a place to live while your newly bought house gets worked on.

TIP! If money will allow, don?t purchase a home that either faces or backs up to a busy roadway. These properties are a bit cheaper than surrounding properties, but once you listen for a bit, it should be obvious why.

Try to understand mortgage loan terms before you go to buy a home. A failure to understand how your monthly payments are structured, especially interest over the life of the loan, may place your home in jeopardy. So take all the time necessary to understand a mortgage and avoid any confusion.

Make sure you do your homework before investing in any new property. There are a lot of people who rush into property purchases that end up being poor decisions, and as a result, they lose significant amount of money and time. Take the time to learn more about the neighborhood, the condition of the property, and the average real estate prices.

When deciding to purchase a large and commercial piece of real estate, make sure you get a trustworthy partner. Meeting the conditions for a commercial loan is much easier when two or more people cosign. Having a partner gives you an extra person to help pay the necessary down payment and any needed credit in order to be qualified for a loan.

TIP! As part of an offer on a prospective property, you can always request that the seller pay a portion of your closing costs or make another type of financial concession.
